A squeaky floor is annoying but fixable. Most squeaks are caused by wood rubbing against wood or loose nails — and you can silence them in under an hour.
STEP 1: Locate the Squeak Precisely
Walk slowly across the floor and pinpoint exactly where the squeak occurs. Mark the spot with painter’s tape. Squeaks usually happen when subfloor panels rub against each other, when subfloor has separated from joists, or when floorboards rub against nail shanks.
STEP 2: Try Talcum Powder First
For minor squeaks between floorboards, sprinkle talcum powder or powdered graphite along the seams of the noisy boards and work it into the cracks with a paintbrush. Walk over the area several times to work the powder deeper. This is the easiest fix and often solves wood-on-wood rubbing squeaks completely.
STEP 3: Locate the Floor Joist
Use a stud finder to locate the floor joist nearest to the squeaky spot. Squeaks are best silenced by fastening the subfloor back down to the joist. Joists typically run perpendicular to floorboards and are spaced 16 inches apart.
STEP 4: Drive Screws Through the Subfloor Into the Joist
For carpeted floors, drive a special wood screw that snaps off below the surface so it is invisible after installation through the carpet and subfloor into the joist at the squeak location. For hardwood floors, use a squeaky floor repair kit with a special screw that snaps off below the surface so it is invisible after installation.
STEP 5: Fix Squeaks From Below If You Have Basement Access
If you can access the floor from below, have someone walk on the squeaky spot while you look for movement from the basement. Apply construction adhesive to the gap between subfloor and joist and clamp with a short wood block and screw driven up from below.
STEP 6: Secure Loose Hardwood Boards
For squeaky individual hardwood boards, drill a small pilot hole at a 45-degree angle through the board into the subfloor, drive a finishing nail, countersink it, and fill with color-matched wood putty.
PRO TIP
Squeaks tend to worsen in dry winter months when wood contracts and gaps open up. Running a humidifier in squeaky areas can reduce seasonal squeaking without any physical repair.
